No cold start
Reply Quote

This is my first time in a forum and I need help.

My Rhino is a 2005 and every time the temperture turns cold it won't start at all.  It cranks over good and has good spark.  The only way it will start is by spraying  engine starting fluid in the air box.

It then starts instantly and runs fine.  It will also re-start fine.

I have checked the choke and adjusted it per the shop manual instructions.

In the summer it starts great with little to no choke.

Any ideas of how to correct this problem will be very appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve. Assuming that your starting circuit is functioning correctly, you may be able to enhance cold weather starting by going up a couple of sizes on the starter jet. First, pull your carb and blow out the circuits. A little piece of trash can cause all kinds of problems. Beyond that, a #55 starter jet is stock, so you may want to try a #60 or a #65 and see if it helps. The part is actually a main jet, just a small one. Part number is Mikuni N102.221 6mm small round slotted main jet. ww

Do you suppose this can be connected to the fuel pump issue? Not moving enough fuel to get a cold start. Just comes as a thought to my mind. My 06 can be a bear to start in cold weather and I spoke with another guy who has an 04 and his is tough also. Any thoughts here?
If it doesn't go force it, if it breaks it should have been replaced anyway

It is a good thought, however, the starter jet is immersed in a pool of fuel, just like the main jet, when starting or running. The fuel pump can be an issue when running but it is likely to have no bearing on cold starts (assuming the float level is correctly adjusted). ww
