You  should have to engage the brake pedal before it will allow you too. If you have the emergency brake and the machine in nuetral you can turn the key without depressing the brake pedal.

thank you for the info. but it still will not start in high, low or reverse when i depress the brake pedal. it will start just fine in neutral with or with out the brake depressed. do you think it could be the neutral safety switch? thanks

Mine won't start unless it is in neutral  and either the brake depressed or the park brake set. Will your car start in gear, it is the same set-up, not a defect.

sorry to keep asking this but, it is not the same setup as my truck. and it states in the yamaha owners manuel and i quote from page 6-2 the engine can be started in any gear if the brake is applied. however, it is recommended to shift into neutral before starting the engine. and we all know that out on the trail you dont always shut it off in neutral. so if you have the rhino on a bind getting it into neutral might not be so easy . that is why yamaha made this system so you can start the machine in any gear with the brake applied.  and my problem is it will not start in any gear with the brake applied . it starts in neutral with out any problem. and if your rhino only starts in neutral then you have the same problem that i have. thanks

My 2007 Rhino starts in gear with the brake applied. I'm not looking at my rhino now, but I would guess theres a switch on the brake lever below the dashboard. If that year has a switch, I would say its bad or it needs to be adjusted.

Sorry, my mistake. It should be able to start in gear with foot brake applied. The park brake must be set without the brake applied. Check the gear position switch or the brake light switch.
